MENOPAUSE AND DIABETES - A TYPICAL STUDY AMONG POPULATION OF PUNJAB

Abstract
Present study has been undertaken on 1000 subjects, 50% were from urban and 50% from rural population. In 445, 274 (61.6%) women were in the state of premenopause and 171 (38.4%) in postmenopausal status. Out of total (445) women, 135 (30.3%), 37 (8.3%), 16 (3.6%) and 53 (11.9%) were borderline, newly detected, known and total diabetics, respectively. Borderline (33.9%), newly detected (11.6%), known (7.6%) and total disbetic cases (19.3%) were more in menopausal women as compared to the premenopausal women. Out of total diabetics 20 females in premenopausal status, 17 (85%) were newly detected but postmenopausal 33 women, these were 20 (66.6%). The data also reflected that obesity was more pronounced in females as compared to males. Value for body mass index >25 were 30.8% in females and 22.5% in males.
