Abstract
Helminth infections are a considerable problem in both human and veterinary health, leading to economic losses and decreased productivity. The study aimed to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of Isodon ternifolius leaf extract against helminths. The in vitro anthelmintic activity was evaluated using three different concentrations of aqueous methanol extract of Isodon ternifolius leaf against helminths. Fenbendazole was used as the positive control, and normal saline as the negative control. The anthelmintic activity was assessed by recording the time required for paralysis and death of the worms. Phytochemical screening of the extracts was also carried out as part of the study. Aqueous methanol extract (70% methanol) of Isodon ternifolius leaves, tested at a concentration of 25, 50, and 100 mg/ml, showed noticeable anthelmintic activity against helminths. The activity increased with concentration, indicating a dose-dependent effect. The anthelmintic analysis was performed from March 2024 to February 2026 in the parasitology laboratory, Department of Zoology, Dhanamanjuri University, and the Plant Bioresources Division, Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development, Imphal, Manipur. LC-MS analysis of the extracts was performed to identify the bioactive compound responsible for the observed activity. The analysis revealed several phytoconstituents, including phenolics, alkaloids, terpenoids, glycosides, and saponin derivatives, known for their anthelmintic properties. Overall findings suggest that the leaf extracts of Isodon ternifolius possess significant anthelmintic potential, and that bioactive compounds identified through LC-MS analysis may contribute to their effectiveness against helminths.
