Abstract
In fishes the epithalamic region of the diencephalons is occupied by the habenula. The structure of the habenula is associated with its feeding habits. In the present paper the structure of the eight teleost have been described. Fishes like Etroplus suratensis, Rosbora daniconius, Puntius filamentosus, Xenentodon cancia and Therapon jarbua possesses well developed diencephalons and correspondingly the habenula was well developed due to its surface visual feeding nature. However the fishes of bottom waters as in Amblypharyngodon chakiensis, Mystus gulio and Glossogobius giuris possessed with poorly developed diencephalic region and correspondingly the habenula was poorly developed indicating the non visual feeding habits of these fishes. The variations noticed in the habenula are due to its different feeding habits.
