Abstract
A detailed examination of various details of fingerprints can prove/deny the association of an individual in any crime. Minutiae details of fingerprints help to establish the identity of an individual beyond any doubt. The concept of poroscopy and edgeoscopy in fingerprints mainly based on third level details of fingerprints. Although the practical use of third level details is very less till now but in the cases whereas fingerprints are very fragmented and do not contain sufficient second level details to establish identify, consideration of third level details proves to be efficient. During this study, 200 samples (100 males & 100 females) were studied to identify an individual based on number of pores and edge details in a selected area of 16mm2. The results of the study (17 pores/16 mm2 from right hand and 20 pores/16 mm2 from left hand) while (16 pores/16mm2 for both hands of females) help to determine the gender/ differentiate between left/right hand of same individual at a significance level of p<0.01. Outcomes of this study can help the investigators to nab the perpetrator of any crime even in distorted/smudged fingerprints too.
