Abstract

The present study was carried out to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of the silk dyeing industry effluents on Mitotic Chromosome Anomalies in Mice. Silk dyeing processes release various waste streams and these are capable of contaminating the environment, posing health hazards to the biota. There is paucity of information on dyeing waste of silk industries effluent induced cytotoxicity in swiss albino mice (Mus musculus).

Four to six week old laboratory bred Swiss albino mice (Mus musculus, male) (S-cdri, 2n = 40) seed colony obtained from Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, India. Animal were orally administered @ 1 ml/animal/day for seven consecutive days. The mice of control group were given only 1 ml distilled water/animal/day that is equal to the used for diluting the waste.

Swiss albino mice were orally administered 1 ml day of dyeing waste of silk industries for seven consecutive days to see genotoxic effect on bone marrow cells. Mitotic chromosome abnormalities were increased with increasing the concentration of dyeing waste. Among the gross type of changes C-mitosis, precocious separation and stickiness were more common, acentric fragment, minute fragment, chromatid break and chromatid gaps were more frequent in structural type of abnormalities. Thus the frequencies of individual (Structural) type were more prominent than gross (mitotic disruptive type). Free radicals of dyeing waste may affect chromosomal DNA at either the sugar of the base. In this way it produced more clastogenic damage with respect to the gross type (mitotic disruptive type) which is induced by the interfered with the spindal and another protein.
