Abstract
Studies were conducted to investigate the food preference and effect of various host plants on the growth and development of diamond back moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) during 2001-2002. The insect thrived better on cabbage resulting shortest larval and pupal period, maximum length and weight of mature larvae and pupae and minimum time for completion of the total life cycle. The most preferred food cabbage was followed by cauliflower. A non-cruciferous host. Amaranthus viridis (L.) was the least preferred among the host plants tested and was found to have a distinct retarding effect on the growth rate resulting in prolonged larval and pupal period. Shortest body length and weight of mature larvae and pupae and maximum time in completion of life cycle.
